In years past, the police fleet patrolling Australian roads used to look a lot more exciting. From icons like the ‘Canary Yellow’ VL Turbo Holden Commodore in the 1980s through to late model HSV, FPV, and Chrysler 300 SRT highway patrol cars, the demise of such cars has today’s fleet of SUVs looking less fearsome.
Over in Italy, however, the police fleet still packs some horsepower. That’s because Lamborghini has presented its sixth vehicle destined for the Italian State Police, a special version of the Temerario.
Don’t think it’s just a PR stunt either, as Bologna’s finest has been providing special vehicles to the Polizia for over 20 years – all of which are entirely operational.
The Temerario will be used for the Italian State Police’s most important services, including the emergency transport of organs and medical supplies, as it joins the other Lamborghini cars already in service with the Italian State Police.
The collaboration between the two forces began back in 2004 with the first Gallardo. As early as September that year, it carried out its first emergency organ transport.
This continued with the Gallardo LP 560-4 and Huracán, deployed along the country’s main motorway arteries over the years, while the Urus Performante super SUV joined the police stable in 2023.
The six Lambos that have entered the Italian State Police fleet over the years have played a part in over 200 organ transport missions across the country, in several cases helping save human lives.
These vehicles have also been utilised for more than 1500 road safety education events to promote safe driving.
The Italians aren’t the only ones to use supercars as part of their police fleet, though. In 2023, police in Türkiye turned 23 seized supercars into the latest addition to its fleet.
Over in the US, Florida’s Casselberry Police Department added a McLaren 720S to its stable – although it was at no cost to taxpayers, but rather part of a partnership McLaren Orlando.
Few police fleets top the opulence of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, however, which has included everything including Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Porsches, Bentleys, customised vehicles from Brabus and Mansory, and even a Bugatti Veyron.
