Description

Listing for sale my 1973 Karmann Ghia, I bought this car 2 years ago and it’s been endless fun. Parting with the car now to cut down the garage to one car unfortunately.

The previous owner was a mechanic who had restored Porsche 914’s and 356’s to concours level. This was his hobby car, a small, beautiful and lightweight hot rod. The engine and mechanics have been overhauled with the standard engine replaced with a Type 4 engine from a Porsche 914. The engine was then taken from 2.0L to 2.7L with almost every part being replaced or restored.

I have extensive receipts and logs of the work done from the previous owner and from my own work.

The result is a spine tingling engine producing 170hp at the crank, a far cry from the 50hp original. The last thing that needed doing when I bought it was the gearbox, that was just completed by Boris at Vintage Vee Dub for just shy of $6k.
The gearbox has the freeway flyer final drive for better highway cruising as well as strengthened gears to handle all the power and torque from the motor.

No expense has been spared on this car mechanically. Its benefitted from:
– Dual Weber carburettor’s
– A Vintage Speed short shift kit giving perfect shifting.
– A fully reconditioned steering box
– 911 fully working electric seats
– Central locking fitted for easy access
– Upgraded disc brakes all round
– Custom aluminium mini-light style wheels
– A vintage Speed exhaust.
– A Nardi steering wheel from an original 356.
– Oil coolers installed keeping the engine always cool, never close to overheating.

I bought the car from a very reluctant seller who needed to part with the car due to some health troubles, I’m sure that he would have loved to enjoy it for a bit longer if circumstances allowed.

Over the time I’ve had it I’ve had to only do the gearbox, all other servicing was minor oil changing and a brake master cylinder. It’s a cheap to run classic car with a full on race experience.

The engine was basically fresh when I bought it, I ran in the engine as instructed from the builder and I got the initial service and engine dyno tuned at BWA Auto and all other servicing done by Boris at Vintage Vee Dub.
Engine done about 5000kms total, gauge indicates 6,660 right now since engine swapped after gauges installed

Always garaged indoors with a car cover.
Oscar Ciebe lights not currently installed but come with the car, easy to fit.
Also comes with various original parts like gauges and heater tubes if wanted.

The paint is a little faded and has some slight bubbling. It was respirated at some point years ago but not to a concours standard. There is no structural rust on this car, some slight bubbles on the exterior. Underneath the floor pans are in perfect condition.
There is a few areas that would benefit from some TLC like carpets and dashboard which has a slight crack but overall it presents in amazing condition.

Car will be sold unregistered cause it’s currently on historic plates which are not transferable. Historic rego is extremely easy to put on this car in NSW and can show you how, other states I haven’t had experience with the systems.
Rego and Shannon’s insurance costs are cheap even at an agreed value.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Open to offers.

Thanks!
