Crikey! Collecting Cars to auction Steve Irwin’s Toyota LandCruiser

Online auction site Collecting Cars is auctioning a Toyota ‘Troopie’ wagon that once belonged to the late Steve Irwin, the world-famous Australian conservationist and zookeeper.

The well-worn 1982 Toyota LandCruiser HJ47 Troop Carrier previously performed duties at Queensland’s Australia Zoo, the 700-acre facility that continues the Crocodile Hunter’s mission of conservation through education.

Long gone is the naturally-aspirated ‘2H’ 4.0-litre inline-six diesel that originally powered the Troopie, in its place a gutsier 4.9-litre (302 cubic inch) Ford Cleveland V8.

Indicating a well-travelled 415,426 kilometres from new, the white Troop Carrier is adorned with green ‘The Crocodile Hunter’ lettering along the sides and bonnet. It also comes with a history booklet and a letter from Steve’s son, Robert Irwin, authenticating the vehicle’s provenance.

The vehicle’s seller acquired it directly from Australia Zoo in 2013. It subsequently underwent extensive mechanical refurbishment, an electrical system overhaul and other improvements during its current 12-year ownership.

Collecting Cars is offering the vehicle for sale via its online auction platform with bidding opening on Sunday August 24 and closing on Monday September 1 2025.
