The 1971 Mustangs were completely restyled. They were over two inches longer. They were lower, wider and heavier than any previous models. A full-width grille, incorporating the headlights within its opening, and the Mustang emblem was set in the centre, and the new hood had concealed windshield wipers. New door handles fit flush to the body. New on the options list were the Special Instrumentation Group package; electric rear window defogger; and a Body Protection Group package that included side mouldings and front bumper guards.
