The Mercedes-Benz Museum is a marvel of modern architecture

The museum itself is a modern architectural marvel. Designed by UNStudio, a Dutch architectural firm, the building is shaped like a double helix, symbolising the intertwining of tradition and innovation. Its nine floors are connected by a series of spiralling ramps, guiding visitors through a chronological journey from the birth of the automobile to the present day. This layout allows for an organic flow through the exhibits, enhancing the storytelling experience.

The journey begins on the top floor with the pioneering years of the automobile. Here, visitors can marvel at the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, widely regarded as the world’s first automobile. This section is a tribute to Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, the two inventors whose groundbreaking work laid the foundation for modern automotive engineering. There is something deeply humbling about standing next to this vehicle, knowing this was the seed from which the automotive industry as we know it today germinated. These early exhibits showcase the rapid development of automobile technology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with vehicles that revolutionised personal transportation and paved the way for mass production.

Mercedes-Benz’s post-war renaissance was led by the 300 SL Gullwing

The post-World War II era was a marked a renaissance for Mercedes-Benz after the devastation of the War. The museum showcases the remarkable resurgence of the brand with models like the 300 SL Gullwing, an icon of automotive design and engineering. Introduced in 1954, the 300 SL was the world’s fastest production car at the time and featured distinctive gullwing doors that have since become a symbol of Benz’s innovative spirit. Another highlight is the 1955 Mercedes-Benz SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, which fetched the astonishing price of $135M Euros ($204m AUD) in 2022.

From the elegance of the 300 SL and the SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe to the brute force of the machines in the racing section, there is something here for every car afficionado to savour.

What makes the Mercedes-Benz Museum truly brilliant is how it balances the cars with the history surrounding them. For example, during the post-war years, the story of the brand’s reemergence and how it helped rebuild Germany’s image by creating vehicles that redefined luxury and class in an era when most people were still recovering from the blitz.
