Record $3.41 million bid on rare Ferrari highlights RR Auctions’ inaugural February 2026 sale

Sydney-based RR Auctions, the sister brand to classic car content powerhouse Retro Rides, has celebrated its introductory online sale with a string of successful bids and record-setting offer on a 323km/h (201mph) supercar.

The car in question is a Ferrari F40, one of very few in the world to have been converted from left to right-hand drive.

The F40 was the rarest and most high profile of several Ferraris offered during RR Auctions’ February 2026 sale, receiving a top bid of $3.41 million after a strenuous battle that saw digital paddles raised no less than 53 times.

While not enough to buy the car on auction night, the amount was certainly impressive and 40 percent above the $2,499,000 sought some years ago for a more common LHD version of the F40.

Had it sold at that price it would have surpassed the record for any car successfully sold at auction in Australia; that being the $2.1 million paid in 2018 for a Marlboro-branded VH Commodore race car that delivered back-to-back Bathurst 1000 victories for Peter Brock in 1982 and 1983.

Another Italian exotic that did find a home was a 2005 model Lamborghini Murcielago, sold prior to auction for an undisclosed sum, off the back of an inspired digital marketing campaign that included a stunning in-house video of the V12-powered supercar in action.

Other cars at the RR Auctions’ sale to find new owners included a pair of Porsche 993 Carrera coupes which reached $126,000 and $115,750 respectively, and a rare Dodge Viper GTS coupe that delivered a winning bid of $145,000.

Another sporty American to do well was a 1971 Chevrolet Corvette roadster, this one modified to resemble the rare and desirable Big Block L88 and selling at $75,500.

Lovers of Australian classic Fords would have enjoyed the flurry of bidding that ended with a scarce XT Falcon GT in stunning condition selling at a very strong $130,500.

Another joining RR’s list of successful sales was a beautifully prepared MGA with a modified engine and five-speed transmission plus a lusciously retrimmed interior. When bidding ended it had realised $60,000 to become the sole British sale of the night.

You’ll find more great classic, prestige and performance cars like these listed at RR Auctions every month, with the brand’s next sale running from March 15-25.

Please Note: All figures are in Australian dollars and do not include the Buyer’s Premium.

Writer & Head Valuer

At age 14, surrounded by stacks of motoring magazines from the local junk shop, Cliff Chambers was warned by a concerned mother that he would ‘Never get anywhere knowing a lot about old cars.’  Seventeen years later when his definitive book, Making Money From Collectable Cars was published, she was proud to be proven wrong.

That was in 1987, but Cliff’s life was already revolving around all things automotive. From working part time in a panel shop while at university, he moved to motor industry consultancy roles and managing a Championship winning rally team.

During the 1990s he joined the classic vehicle insurance industry, at the same time becoming a prolific writer for magazines and motoring websites. Then came his ongoing contribution as one of the country’s leading vehicle valuers.

Away from work, automotive events and objects remain prominent in Cliff’s world. He has owned more than 40 cars now considered ‘classic’ and within his collection of motor-related items there remain some of those magazines acquired as a fact hungry teen.

Cliff brings to Retro Rides a blend of unique industry skills and a love of vehicles that will become more obvious with every contribution he makes to the site.
