Queensland auction tops its bill with high-value Holdens

Gold Coast-based retailer and auction host Seven82 Motors has been turning in big numbers at recent sales and the event scheduled for December 7 promises to be no different.

Heading a catalogue that features more than 70 lots is an array of significant Holdens ranging from one of the earliest Brock/HDT cars to a 2017-build HSV showing just 217km.

Heading the HDT array is a VC Commodore with the bigger 308-cubic inch V8 and painted in evocative Firethorn Red. The offerings then move to a genuine VK Group A ‘Blue Meanie’ that has travelled just 94,281km in 40 years, and a top example of the HDT VL Group A – car number 9 of the 500 VLs built, presented in close to concours condition and fully documented.

Moving from HDT to the Walkinshaw HSV operation brings an array of early HSV product, commencing with the obligatory VL Group A Commodore in Panorama Silver.

The car on offer is 087 of 750 and has travelled an extraordinary 34,933km in its lifetime. A couple of other exceptional ‘Walky’ VLs have been sold during the past year and this car looks set to challenge their values.

Less common than the VL but also normally less expensive is the VN-based HSV Group A in Durif Red. This one is #15 of the 302 built, showing just 57,770km and expected to challenge earlier prices achieved by outstanding VN Group As.

The car promoted by Seven82 as the sale’s most significant Holden is another HSV, this one in the shape of an exceptionally rare VS GTS-R.

Unkindly dubbed the ‘Yellow Peril’ when launched in 1996, these HSVs were slow to move when new and only 75 were sold locally. However, they have made exceptional gains during recent years, including one car reportedly sold at more than $1 million.

Scarce as it is, this car may not reach seven figures, but as one of just 15 GTS-Rs with HSV’s optimised ‘stroker’ engine package and one of three with a sunroof, it is still destined to be deep into six-digit territory by the time the auctioneer’s hammer drops.

More modern than the VS but with plenty of nostalgic fervour surrounding its sale is the 217km (yes, it has barely turned a wheel!) GTSR W1 from 2017. This car is one of the last HSVs to be built and has been tucked away and rarely driven since being delivered. As an added buyer incentive, it is finished in rare ‘Son of a Gun’ grey.

Ford buyers need not be despondent because the December 7 sale features a couple of ripper locally built Bue Oval machines as well, beginning with a 68,000km example of the XE Fairmont ESP with 5.8-litre V8 and four-speed manual transmission. Holy Grail stuff and guaranteed to sell as it is listed Unreserved.

More common than the XE and struggling of late to maintain its money is the Ford Falcon BF II Cobra, produced as a run of 400 commemorative cars by FPV in 2007.

Seven82’s sale includes an exceptional example, number 142 of the 400, showing just 13,677 km and almost certain to break the BF’s auction-value shackles. If it doesn’t, a genuine XC Cobra 4.9 Hardtop is also scheduled to appear and it will be offered without Reserve.

Other exceptional Aussie-built models in the sale include a pair of SS Torana Hatchbacks and the A9X sedan which didn’t reach its reserve at the last sale. On the Ford side with details pending are an XB GT Hardtop, an RPO 83 XA GT sedan and stunning XY Fairmont 351. This latter car looks headed for record-price terrain as well with its GS Pack, Globe alloys and presented in Wild Violet.

Seven82 has become famous for setting record prices with its wildly modified North American commercial vehicles, several of which have found their way into the December 7 sale.

They include a pair of seriously altered Chevrolet 3100 pickups plus an air-bagged C10. Also listed is a fully restored Ford Bronco on raised springs and stuffed with 408-cubic inches of modified V8.

Also available is a most unusual 1954 Divco Milk van, fitted with a blown 383-cubic inch bent eight and with design input by legendary US customiser Chip Foose.

Seven82 will open the bidding on all its lots a week prior to the auction which runs from 1pm (AEDST) on Sunday 7 December 2025 until all vehicles are sold or referred.

The complete list of available vehicles is available on the Seven82 Motors website.

Writer & Head Valuer

At age 14, surrounded by stacks of motoring magazines from the local junk shop, Cliff Chambers was warned by a concerned mother that he would ‘Never get anywhere knowing a lot about old cars.’  Seventeen years later when his definitive book, Making Money From Collectable Cars was published, she was proud to be proven wrong.

That was in 1987, but Cliff’s life was already revolving around all things automotive. From working part time in a panel shop while at university, he moved to motor industry consultancy roles and managing a Championship winning rally team.

During the 1990s he joined the classic vehicle insurance industry, at the same time becoming a prolific writer for magazines and motoring websites. Then came his ongoing contribution as one of the country’s leading vehicle valuers.

Away from work, automotive events and objects remain prominent in Cliff’s world. He has owned more than 40 cars now considered ‘classic’ and within his collection of motor-related items there remain some of those magazines acquired as a fact hungry teen.

Cliff brings to Retro Rides a blend of unique industry skills and a love of vehicles that will become more obvious with every contribution he makes to the site.
