Porsche brings back iconic Apple Computer livery for Laguna Seca race

A pair of Porsche 963 racers are set to take to the iconic Laguna Seca circuit this weekend suited up in a suitably legendary Apple Computer livery.

Created to honour 75 years of Porsche Motorsport and 50 years since the founding of tech giant Apple, the special wrap evokes the look of the Porsche 935 K3 that competed during the 1980 season, most notably at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That car adorned in Apple’s retro rainbow colours was entered by Dick Barbour Racing.

The renewed collaboration between Porsche and Apple takes place at an ideal location, with Laguna Seca situated in northern California, roughly 80 miles south of Apple Park, the company’s worldwide headquarters.

Laguna Seca also hosted the last four Porsche Rennsport Reunions, the largest ticketed gathering of Porsche enthusiasts in the world.

The race these two 963s fielded by the Porsche Penske Motorsport works team are competing at is round four of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, held at the challenging circuit – notable for the “Corkscrew” at Turn 8 – on May 3.

Competing in the top-tier GTP category, the #6 Porsche 963 will be shared by France’s Kévin Estre and Belgian Laurens Vanthoor, while #7 will be driven by Frenchman Julien Andlauer and Brazilian Felipe Nasr.

“We’ve enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Porsche, going back to 1980 when a Porsche race car first carried the Apple logo,” says Oliver Schusser, vice president of Apple Music, Sports and Beats.

“That moment marked the beginning of a shared passion for innovation and creativity that continues to define our collaboration today. As Apple celebrates its 50th anniversary, we’re proud to once again partner with Porsche on a design that pays tribute to that original 1980 livery.”
